We're rebuilding Gaza's only disabled children's school. Help us buy wheelchairs & study supplies!

Shams Al Amal School was almost completely destroyed on the last day of Israel’s 2014 offensive on the Gaza Strip. We are rebuilding the school with support from Indonesian public figure Peggy Melati Sukma, who leads an Islamic Women's Movement, Akhwat Bergerak, and in collaboration with humanitarian institution ACT Indonesia.

When the building is complete, we will need to replace the destroyed wheelchairs and study equipment, and we can't do it without you.

Our Partners

A disability should never be a barrier to a child’s education.

With your help, we can provide the children at Shams Al Amal school with wheelchairs and specialized study equipment, so they have access to the education they deserve.

Our supplier will charge us 800 NIS per wheelchair, which is about $206 USD.

We need to buy at least 140 wheelchairs, which will cost around $28,840. The remaining money will be used to buy study equipment and furniture for the school. This cost would be unattainable alone, but together, we can reach our goal, and put smiles on the faces of these children.

How YOU Can Help

No donation is too small. If everybody donated just a little, it would turn into a lot!

If you can't afford to donate, you can still get involved and make a difference! Please share the link to this page on your social networks and with your friends and family.

Save Gaza Project

Save Gaza Project was founded by Dr. Basel Abuwarda and Mostafa Asi in 2014, with the realization that we can work together to help make the positive changes we wish to see in Palestine. With donations from our dedicated followers, we were able to provide poor children in Gaza with school bags and supplies – thank you.

Society of Physically Handicapped People

The Society of Physically Handicapped People is a non-profit, non-political and nongovernmental Palestinian organization in the Gaza Strip, established in 1992 by a group of intuitive physically disabled youths. It was the first NGO in the Gaza Strip to provide opportunities for disabled youth to practice their rights in establishing and leading their organizations.

The Society of Physically Handicapped People aims to encourage, empower and enable those with physical disabilities by educating them to exercise their rights, helping them to succeed in reaching their goals, and assisting them in achieving as much integration into the community as possible.

The Society of Physically Handicapped People provides comprehensive healthcare and medical rehabilitation, education and training, psycho-social programs and services to more than 11,600 beneficiaries with permanent physical disabilities in the Gaza Strip through its specialized medical and education centers in Gaza and Rafah.

Gaza’s Vital Infrastructure Targeted During 51-day Aggression

The Gaza Strip’s vital infrastructure was directly and repeatedly targeted during the 51-day Israeli aggression of 2014, leaving the population without adequate access to healthcare, medicine and medical supplies. For the thousands of physically disabled survivors who rely heavily on these necessities, being without them can be debilitating or even life threatening.

The attacks caused severe damage to the Society of Physically Handicapped People’s clinic and administrative offices. The glass in the windows was blown out, the foundations of the building were damaged, and medical equipment and supplies were lost.

Shams Al Amal School for Handicapped Children

On the last day of Israel’s offensive on the Gaza Strip, the Shams Al Amal School for Handicapped Children was almost completely destroyed when warplanes heavily bombarded the Zeitoun neighborhood. The school teaches hundreds of disabled students at a primary school level, and according to the Ministry of Education in Palestine, it is the only school of its kind.

The destruction of the school’s buildings forced a delay to the start of the school year. In addition to having to make up for lost time, the children must now study in tents amongst the rubble, exposed to all elements in the Gaza winter.

With donations from Indonesia's Peggy Melati Sukma, leader of Islamic Women's Movement, Akhwat Bergerak, and in collaboration with humanitarian institution ACT Indonesia, Save Gaza Project is facilitating the supply and installation of new buildings fully suited to the needs of the Shams Al Amal School for Handicapped Children.

The new buildings are being installed on a 548m2 site, and each one is 4m x 5.5m (22.5m2). Each building will provide space for 15-20 students, along with tables, chairs, and a blackboard.

These buildings will remain as permanent structures even after the original school buildings have been repaired, which will enable 140 more disabled students to receive an education for years to come. They will be furnished, supplied with electricity, water and sanitation, and will operate on a solar power system.

Our goals:

  • Provide a place for children with special needs to complete their education
  • Supply wheelchairs to replace the ones that were destroyed during the attacks
  • Supply specialized study equipment needed to support the children’s learning
  • Save the children from the loss of an academic year
  • Reduce stress on Gaza’s power supply with the energy-saving solar power system, freeing the school from the constraints of operating on the Gaza Strip’s unstable electricity infrastructure
  • Contribute towards the recovery of an invaluable educational institution.
